NordBioChem OÜ has developed an extremely productive membrane fermentation system (the patent application has been filed), which is not narrowly specific to lactic acid production (undisclosed data). Thus, upon using the technology of Nordbiochem OÜ, it is possible to produce sufficiently inexpensive optically active and high purity lactic acid for chemical industry, which assures successful polymerisation processes. The properties of lactic acid polymers are greatly dependent on the purity of starting material, including the chiral purity. The foregoing means the proportion of D and L-stereoisomers in the starting materials of polymerisation process and in end products, on the basis of which macromolecules with different conformation (and hence with quite different properties) are created. This is expressed in the simplest manner in the form of terms “heterotactic” and “isotactic.”
